To Much Fun In The Sun!

With summer weather finally arriving in the Pacific Northwest we have dusted off the sunscreen, beach toys and water wings. Summer is a fun time of year and getting more enjoyable in many ways as the boys get older. Water fun such as swimming, sprinkler time and the beach is high on our list of summer fun. As with everything in our house summer doesn't come without some added concerns for our boys safety. First let me start my saying if anyone has any tips, trick or info please message me or feel free to leave a comment below. This is one area I am kinda lacking in tricks.

Wyatt's sensitiveness to touch makes it interesting getting sunscreen on him. After trying many things and some talk with him about it we now use a spray/mist for 99% of it and just take a little extra time and care to get his face which is the hardest area for him to let us do. This can take sometimes a good 30+ minutes to get done so I start it early before we leave and then usually re apply a 2nd layer when we arrive at the park or our destination. With the *fun stuff* in our sights he will stand for a little more quick spray down most of the time, especially if its a rule and task to complete before he can go play. Wyatt loves everything summer, he is almost 5 this year and is starting to get the summer time theory that its time for fun. He loves wearing his sandals and shorts, playing outside and learning to swim. Other than the sunscreen hurdle and continued work on the noises he is really enjoying summer time fun.

My 2 year old Nash, wont conform to summer "wear" easily. He has his ridged clothing *wants* and anything outside that is an unwanted visitor in his dresser and especially on him. This includes pull-ups, swim diapers and underwear. Nash is working really hard as you know on potty training and doing so well most days. But he is having a hard time with the clothing that comes along with potty training and summer time. When its 90+ outside and no a/c in the house its hard to explain to him that he shouldn't wear his long sleeved pj's to bed or why he needs to NOT wear a diaper in the pool (man those things can hold a ton!) the other day I had a less than stellar Mommy moment when after 20 minutes of trying to talk him into a swim diaper and shorts I just finally wrestled them on him, he put up a good fight. The photo left of him is after our match, and is my punishment from him, he refused to look at me for hours, wouldn't put on his shoes, a shirt or anything else including sunscreen. He was going to make me work for the rest of those things too....I finally put him into the car as he was (see photo) and headed off to the water park. Once there he sat on the beach blanket watching his brother and friend go play and pouted for a few minutes before letting me put sunscreen on him and off he went to play. For the record (and he in the future would want it noted) he picked up his stance of no shoes, shirt or service as soon as we left the park a few hours later and the ride home was just in a diaper.

Our summer fun doesn't stop there ;) On top of being 2 and just a non stop toddler who doesn't stop for anything or anyone, Nash gets overheated easily. So sunscreen is very important but also keeping him hydrated, clothing appropriate (as much as I can) and out of the sun when all else fails. I don't know why this is, I am guessing it has to do with his body regulation and how he cant sense pain easily, and this obviously goes for sunburned and over heated?1? He could be boiling and brighter than a cherry tomato and wonder what all the fuss is about. :/ fun times. Wyatt is a little better about this because he is VERY aware of this body and the slightest scratch, burn or bug bite and he is on top of it and making sure everyone else is as well.

Speaking of sunscreen.....time to get ready to hit the water park again this morning. Stay safe and cool everyone! :)
